Living Legacy

Living Legacy

On this Veterans Day, I wanted to share a paper my 13-year-old wrote in school about a special veteran.

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13 ESV). This verse symbolizes the life of a patriot. The men and women who serve our country start out as individuals. Quickly, they become family. Patriotism shows a deep level of commitment, sacrifice, and honor.

True patriotism starts with a committed heart. Jay D. was a lively, young man from Kansas with a longing for adventure. At this point in his life, he had already lost both of his parents. Through it all, this farm boy dreamed of making a difference. Although he had opportunities to play baseball and pursue other dreams, Jay was so committed to serving his country that he joined a year before he was legally allowed to. At 17, Jay D. began a 50-year service to the United States Navy, 1943-1993. Truly, Jay had a loyal heart.

Sacrifice hurts. After being accepted into the Navy, Jay went straight to work. In order to join, he had to leave his family, which was one of the many things he gave up. Most people will never experience the sacrifice military men and women make. Jay, along with many others, risk their lives every day for their country. Above all, these strong men and women fight for what they know is right. Sacrifice is fruitful.

Veterans deserve to be honored. After decades of serving the U.S. military, Jay D. retired from active duty. He then became the director of Moral, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR). MWR’s mission is to care for the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of military personnel. Knowing how important it was to him when he was a sailor, he served with joy. His new role allowed him to support the sailors, as he raised his own family. I’m delighted to be able to honor Jay D. and many others who have served in the U.S. military.

Through the life of one man, I’ve learned how patriotism requires commitment, sacrifice, and honor. Though I never got to meet him, Jay D. was my grandpa. I feel his presence when I sing the National Anthem or watch an American flag blowing in the wind. His patriotism is an inspiration to me and I hope it is for you, too. I’m proud to be his granddaughter and an American. Jay’s legacy lives on in me.

May the legacy of those vets who have gone before us, continue to live on as we pray for those who are still serving.  God bless our veterans. God bless America. 🇺🇸
