Lighthouse

Lighthouse

Years ago, we took the kids to the Historic Lighthouse at Ponce Inlet.  My little girls were amazed at the tall and beautiful “princess tower”.  When it came time for us to climb up the spiraling staircase to the top of the 175 foot tall structure, mommy only made it two steps.  There wasn’t enough room in this tiny tower for my dizzy spells and anxious heart.  I waited outside while my husband took our two young girls a little further up.  That day I added Lighthouses to my “DON’T EVER DO AGAIN” list.

Fast forward a few years later, guess where the big End of the School Year field trip was scheduled?  I declared in that moment, “I will bring you but, I’m not going in the lighthouse.” The rules were set and lunch was packed.

During the field trip I did the tour with my daughter’s class.  When it came time to go up in the lighthouse, I expressed my fear to the other moms. It was a vulnerable, humble, real moment that somehow gave me the courage to try.  With my little girl’s hand in mine, I walked into that lighthouse.  I took those two steps, and then I didn’t stop.

I prayed the whole way up.  “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”  My heart was pounding. We got to the top deck outside and I burst through the door and my sweet girl yelled, “You did it, MOM!”   I will never forget that feeling. 203 steps up, 203 steps down.  Each one was a step of faith.

Here we are at the top!
Heart racing but all smiles!

I stood looking out at the ocean from the balcony of this mountain I had just climbed and thought about the importance of a lighthouse.  It’s created to shine the light in the dark for others to see…to warn those at sea of the dangers ahead and to help guide them.

Oh, what a beautiful reminder.  God is our lighthouse, our guiding light even through uncertainty and anxious steps, our way when we stumble in the darkness. We get to live our lives sharing that light with others.  I’m always on the lookout now for different lighthouses to visit. They are a beautiful reminder of the hope that we have!

Than Jesus again spoke to them, I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
John 8:12

What past fear is stopping you from the freedom Christ has for you? What steps of faith can you begin taking today? Maybe your lighthouse is forgiving someone or allowing yourself to dream again.  I’m praying He shows you the areas in your heart, and mine too, where we can learn to trust Him even more.

Feel free to share with a friend! 💕

  1. Thank you for your story. Life is brilliant when God is in control. The darkness can’t creep in. God bless you and your family. Holly
