Are you sure you wanna say that?  We have all been there, saying something we probably shouldn’t have! 

I’ve been on the radio for over twenty years.  When that mic is on, I know I need to choose my words carefully.  It’s a weight and pressure that I count as an honor. However, choosing my words with those in my life has always proven to be a bigger challenge. I would venture to say it may even be a societal issue.  We are being trained to speak our mind to anyone at any moment which, at times, creates even more division. More hurt. 

Twitter is releasing a feature that detects “mean” replies on its service and will ask the question “Do you want to review this before Tweeting?” At that point, you can edit, send, or even change your mind and delete the whole thing before the world reads your response.  

Thinking before you speak is hard but it’s wise.  Having a filter is important. On social media, email, text message, or even when we are talking to the people right in front of us.  

How quick are you to respond when things aren’t going your way?  God has already given us a feature to make those same decisions that Twitter is offering.  He has given us the choice to live out Ephesians 4:29.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

I pray every day that God would give me the courage to say what I need to but that he would also help me to NOT say the things I shouldn’t.

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.
Psalm 141:3

It’s tempting but everything we think doesn’t need to be said. I’ve learned the hard way that we can’t UNSAY something.  Let’s pray for that guard over our mouths, wisdom from God, and the patience for His perfect timing to use our words to build others up.
